Cool Wireless Apps of the WeekSorry. It's all old news on this page; I'm having trouble keeping up, so you'd do better to check out the Wireless Industry News Blog NTT DoCoMo launched a new service in April 2006 that allows some phones to act as credit cards. Users can buy goods by waving their phones over a read, and the purchase gets added onto their phone bill. Just think of the interest they could be collecting soon! If you ask me, this is THE killer app all providers have been waiting for. Look at the profits credit card companies make.
Motorola is launching a radio service for their phones that sort of sounds like it models subscription-based satellite radio. There's a company called Flix that has developed a video player for cell phones; you can download it by sending an SMS to them, and you don't even need a 3G phone; as long as it's color, you should be fine (but most color phones are 3G-capable, aren't they?). Users will be able to download clips of comedy, sport, news, and...ahem...other "in-demand" videos. http://www.3g.co.uk/PR/Oct2003/5910.htm (Send a text message with the words FLIX to 80231) ?? NTT DoCoMo is asking 2000 of it's 504i phone users to trial a Mobile Payment Service at 40 different shops. They will have a credit card recorded in their phones and be able to beam those numbers from their infrared ports to special devices at shops and vending machines. DoCoMo plans to officially launch the service to all their subscibers in April 2004.
